Ep 20: Human Rights Memorial Park on Lyudao / Green Island
We make a long drive up Taitung to catch a boat to Lyudao, also known as Green Island, a small volcanic island about 33 km off the eastern coast of Taiwan in the Pacific Ocean.
Green Island is the ROC's fourth-largest island and is accessible by airplane landing in the Lyudao Airport in eight to 12 minutes from Taitung City. Being a popular scuba-diving destination for both locals and expatriates living in Taiwan, there are also many ferries available daily to take visitors over to the island. We took the ferry option because we will be exploring the island with the scooter, which was also allowed to board the ferry. 
Our place of residence on this island, is ironically a Balinese-themed resort, Green Island Bali Resort. There are rooms are simple, cosy and offer exquisite, gorgeous sea views. There are rooms for 2, 3, 4, 5 and even 6 if you'd like to all stay in the same room.
A habitat for deer, goats, chameleons, giant bats, coconut crabs as well as resident and migratory birds, the island was originally inhabited by the Amis Taiwanese aborigines. Now, fewer than half of the registered 2,634 residents of the island actually live on the island, making it a quiet place to getaway from the usual hustle and bustle of city life.
Human Rights Memorial Park
The Human Rights Memorial Park was previously known as the Lyudao Prison. Prisoners were transferred from other prisons throughout Taiwan, particuarly those who are stubborn and most resistant to reforms. The prison took advantage of its isolated geographic character as an island and enforced strict discipline on the prisoners; hoping to reform them.
You'll see in the video the various correctional facilities and the prisoners' place of accommodation. 
Other than the Human Rights Memorial Park, the other key areas to visit would be the Lighthouse, and of course, Zhaori Hot Spring, one of only three salt-water hot springs in the world.
